As you continue through the Middle Atlas, you’ll pause in the cedar forests near Azrou to meet the playful Barbary apes. Passing through Berber villages and the apple rich town of Midelt for lunch, the route then leads off the main road at Er Rich for a scenic detour through remote mountain paths and traditional Berber hamlets.
By late afternoon, you’ll reach the dramatic Toudgha Gorges, where dinner and a peaceful night’s rest await unless winter snowfall reroutes the journey for safety.
Day 02 : Tinghir – Merzouga
After breakfast, take time to explore the scenic beauty of the Todgha Gorges with a peaceful walk along the riverbank or through the towering canyon. As you continue your journey, you’ll pass through a series of Berber villages, offering a glimpse into the daily rhythm of traditional Moroccan life.
Heading toward the desert, curious mounds along the roadside reveal ancient “khettarat” ingenious underground irrigation channels you can even descend into for a closer look. By afternoon, you’ll be welcomed with a glass of mint tea before going on a camel ride across the towering Erg Chebbi dunes.
As the sun dips beneath the golden dunes, the Sahara comes alive with a symphony of colors painting the horizon. Your night unfolds with a flavorful dinner, the rhythmic beat of Berber music by the campfire, and a peaceful stay in a luxurious desert tent fully equipped with a private bathroom and space to unwind beneath a sky full of stars.
Day 03 : Merzouga – Fes
If you’re up early enough, you’ll witness one of the Sahara’s most unforgettable sights: the sunrise casting golden light and long shadows across the dunes. After breakfast at camp, you’ll ride your camel back to the edge of the desert, where your journey north resumes.
The route passes through Rissani and Erfoud, known for their fascinating fossil workshops where ancient stones are transformed into everything from delicate souvenirs to striking furniture pieces. From there, the drive follows the lush Ziz Valley, lined with endless palm groves and famous for its annual date festival.
Crossing the dramatic Middle Atlas Mountains once more, you’ll stop for lunch in Midelt before continuing over the scenic Ayachi Mountain.
